Chapter 9 Inter-Integrated Circuit

Introduction
The Inter-Integrated Circuit (IIC or I 2 C) provides a method of communication between a number of
devices. The interface is designed to operate up to 100 kbps with maximum bus loading and timing. The
device is capable of operating at higher baud rates, up to a maximum of clock/20 (or 400 kHz), with
reduced bus loading. The maximum communication length and the number of devices that can be
connected are limited by a maximum bus capacitance of 400 pF. System Management Bus Specification
(SMBus), Version 2 is supported.
This module is the same master/slave I 2 C module found on many Freescale devices. The MMA955xL
platform devices already have a dedicated slave interface to communicate with a host processor as detailed
in “Slave Port Interface” on page 115. Consequently, this additional I 2 C circuit will be used mainly as a
master I 2 C for controlling and communicating with external peripherals such as any sensors. Doing so, the
MMA955xL device will behave as an effective and autonomous sensor hub.
The I 2 C module may continue to run in STOP FC mode so long as PCESFC1[MI2C] is set to 1. Because
the system clock runs at only 62.5 kHz in STOP SC , this module should not be used in that mode.
NOTE
On MMA955xL devices, the SDA1 and SCL1 I 2 C lines share the same pins
as SDO and SSB slave SPI lines. Consequently, this additional I 2 C circuit
can only be used when the MMA955xL slave interface is operating under
I 2 C mode.

? Repeated START signal generation/detection
? Acknowledge-bit generation/detection
